Framed Cabinetry

The most popular cabinet style in North America, and is often referred to as standard cabinets.

Framed Cabinets

Framed cabinetry features a face frame mounted on the front of the cabinet box, with doors and drawers attached directly to that frame. The amount of the frame that remains visible is known as the “overlay.”

  • Traditional Overlay: This classic style leaves more of the frame exposed, showing about ½” of the frame along the sides of the doors and drawers, and a 1” reveal at the top, bottom, and sides. It creates a timeless, traditional look.
  • Modified Overlay: For a more updated style, the doors and drawer fronts are made larger, covering more of the frame. This results in just ¼” of the frame visible on the sides, with 1” at the top and bottom — offering a cleaner, more modern appearance.

Choosing Your Overlay Style

When it comes to design, the overlay style you choose can set the tone for your entire space.

  • Standard (Traditional) Overlay highlights more of the cabinet frame, creating a warm, classic look that feels timeless in kitchens and bathrooms.

  • Full (Modified) Overlay minimizes the frame, giving cabinetry a sleek, seamless appearance that pairs beautifully with more modern designs.

Both options deliver style and quality — the right choice simply depends on the personality you want your home to reflect.
